So, does it work? My question is how in the hell does she keep track of counting 60 pills every day? Well, doctors report, the Three's Company star should be able to "live forever" so long as she keeps up the regimen. She does report that the vaginal injections do "hurt" by the way.

EVERYONE LOVED SUZANNE SOMERS AS CHRISSY in Three's Company! Now comes the The Suzanne Somers Diet which has benefited terrifically due to Miss Somers celebrity status. The book "Eat Great, Lose Weight Book!! "is extremely likeable, reads easy with a friendly tone throughout but I question the long-term effectiveness of her diet strategies.

The diet is really nothing new as it seems to resemble other 'high-protein, low-carb regimen' diet plans. It does have a few unique twists however.

For example protien and carbs are not to be eaten together and fruit needs to be eaten on an empty stomach. The other odd twist is there is no mention of exercise as a component of her diet plan. Are we to believe she looks as good as she does without exercise or weightlifting ?(she claims she rarely works out at the gym.)

While some critics of the The Suzanne Somers Diet have even deemed the advice 'gibberish and 'pseudoscience' her bookwriting style is very reader friendly and the glamourous photography make the books easy to enjoy.

What's the theory?

Hybrid low carb - high protien diet - To 'Somersize' you split your diet into two distinct phases, (1) Weight loss and (2) weight maintanence.

Weight loss -the goal of the first phase - virtually eliminates all sugar and white flour from your meals. Basically like other high protien diets, the initial stages remove as many carbs as possible

Weight loss maintanence - The goal of the second phase, the carbs are still restriced but not as much. Somers introduces 7 guidelines that you must abide by in this phase, she says:

Jackie Berning, PhD, a registered dietitian and associate professor of biology at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, says the big problem with the diet is that there is not a stitch of science to show that any of these 7 strategies work.

Is This Diet Healthy?

Questionable The caloric intake at level 2 recommends only about 1200 calories a day - which almost categorizes this diet as a 'starvation diet' ( based on the guidelines of the USDA and other consumer health organizations). At 1200 calories a day you can just about eat anything and lose weight.

Pro- In her favor the Somers diet plan informs dieters about many unhealthy ingredients in foods that she eliminates from the diet - shortenings, cakes, and foods made with hydrogenated oils - all containing trans fats.

Possible Con - The Suzanne Somers Diet is very liberal regarding saturated fats, allowing butter, beef and bacon which is similar to the Atkins diet. The debate continues regarding health implications of long-term high protien, high fat low carb consumption as a dieting mentality. Dieters, however, may enjoy the freedom of eating the rich tasty foods that contain these saturated fats - meats, cheeses and butter.

The 1200 calories a day seems questionable as a strict daily target caloric intake for everyone - why is weight, height, age, exercise level not added to the formula? 1200 calories a day would be border line starvation for a lot of people especially if they engaged in moderatre, frequent exercise. Should we assume the diet is targeted to folks with a very sedintary lifestyle?

Will this Diet Work Long Term?

It's Questionable - however there are many positive testimonials supporting the diet. Somers has done a good job of providing testimonials and success stories in favor of 'Somersizing'. If you stick to 1200 calories how can you not lose weight? Most people with even the most sedintary lifestyles burn at last 2000 calories a day.

Tracking all the food combinations seemed like a rather tedious process - a diet like the South Beach Diet seems to accomplish the same thing and may be easier and healthier.

Experts Opinion

Many experts question the rationale behind all the crazy rules on food combining, basically because there has been no real documented studies to back any of omers claims. She does post plenty of positive anecdotal evidence provided in the form of testimonials, but that's mainly from people trying to sell her programs directly or indirectly.
